SEATTLE - Planned Parenthood Votes Northwest & Hawaii (PPVNH) is encouraged by the initial results reported tonight across Washington state and looks forward to seeing the final outcome as ballots continue to be counted in the days to come.
In Washington State, PPVNH focused on mobilizing women and young people, and partnered for the third year in a row with the Our Votes Count coalition to engage infrequent voters in targeted districts across the state, specifically elevating the voices of young people and people of color in the electoral process. We congratulate our endorsed candidates in targeted races on their successful and hard-fought campaigns, including Bill Ramos & Lisa Callan for 5th LD Representatives, Mari Leavitt & Christine Kilduff for 28th LD Representatives, and Claire Wilson for 30th LD Senate. We know these candidates will fight tirelessly for accessible health care and defend the reproductive rights of their constituents.
Statement from Treasure Mackley, Vice President of PPVNH:
“We are encouraged by tonight’s initial results for Dr. Kim Schrier (8th CD) and Emily Randall (26th LD), and look forward to seeing the final outcome as more ballots are counted in the coming days. We are very proud of the work we have done to mobilize voters across the state and expand participation in the election, especially among women of color and young voters.
“Regardless of the final results, we plan on working with our elected officials on the state and national levels to pass legislation that will expand reproductive rights to all individuals, regardless of race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or immigration status. We have a responsibility to our patients and supporters to hold our elected officials accountable, and we plan on continuing to do so in 2019 and beyond.”
During the 2018 midterms, Planned Parenthood Votes Northwest & Hawaii (PPVNH) implemented a strategic electoral program to activate voters and mobilize our robust supporter base. In Washington state, PPVNH mobilized 393 volunteers, knocked on 26,526 doors, contacted 34,584 voters by phone and text, and conducted a direct mail and digital program that reached over 300,000 Washington voters in support of reproductive rights champions in key races. PPVNH focused on mobilizing women, young people and supporters to engage with voters in targeted districts across the state.
We are more determined than ever to defend the rights of women and families against increasing threats to their freedoms. At a time when attacks on women's rights are the number one reason bringing voters to the polls, PPVNH will continue to play a critical role organizing supporters across the state to fight back and defend their rights.
