HONOLULU –– In a crushing blow for the country and reproductive health and rights, voters across the country elected Donald J. Trump as president of the United States of America. However, in Hawaii we saw big wins for reproductive health and rights. Hawaii elected a number of women's health champions to the state legislature and Honolulu Mayor's office. These results show that the voters in Hawaii value women’s health and rights and sexual education, and that they demand their elected officials support and protect them.

Laurie Field, Hawaii Legislative Director with Planned Parenthood Votes Northwest and Hawaii said:

“Congratulations to all of our endorsed candidates on their victories. Stanley Chang and Gregg Takayama, in particular, ran strongly on an agenda to expand access to reproductive health care and their victories shows that voters demand their elected officials protect women’s health and rights. This is a bright spot following last night’s election, and today we will celebrate these wins and get to work in protecting and expanding our access to reproductive health care.”

PPVNH was proud to support Stanley Chang in Senate District 9 and Gregg Takayama House District 34. Chang challenged incumbent Sam Slom, who has spent many years in the legislature opposing Planned Parenthood and women's health legislation. Takayama also faced an anti-women's health challenger, Jaci Agustin. Hawaii women deserve better and that’s why PPVNH mobilized volunteers to knock on almost 750 doors in Senate District 9 and make almost 1000 calls to voters in House District 34.

Planned Parenthood advocacy and political organizations helped turn out voters and to move voters toward women’s health champions this election because of our nationwide outreach, our ability to move key swing and base voters, and strong support for our issues.
