House Members Who Are Hostile to Sexual and Reproductive Health Care Passed Amendments Attacking Essential Health Care in the National Defense Authorization Act

Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed several harmful amendments attacking access to health care for service members and their families, including abortion and gender-affirming care, as part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

Statement from Alexis McGill Johnson, president, Planned Parenthood Action Fund:

For years, anti-abortion House members have shown that they will stop at nothing to push their unpopular and dangerous agenda to control our health and bodies — including sneaking harmful amendments into legislation at every turn. Everyone deserves access to abortion, including service members and their families. These lawmakers were elected to represent the American people, who overwhelmingly support abortion rights and access to sexual and reproductive health care, not to play games with our rights. Planned Parenthood Action Fund will continue to call these members out for their reckless votes.”

Today’s votes included measures to:

  • Reverse the Department of Defense policy to support service members and their families who are forced to travel off base for reproductive health care — including abortion care — that is not covered or offered at their base;
  • Prohibit coverage of gender affirming care through TRICARE, exacerbating the existing impact of discrimination on transgender service members;
  • Prohibit provision of gender affirming care through the Exceptional Family Member Program.
