WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, House Republicans elected Mike Johnson (LA-04) to serve as the next speaker of the House of Representatives. Johnson was the party’s fourth nominee for speaker, filling a role that was vacant for more than 20 days after House Republicans voted to oust Rep. Kevin McCarthy.

Speaker Johnson’s record is as extreme as it gets. He has supported a long list of dangerous restrictions on access to abortion and all sexual and reproductive health care, including co-sponsoring legislation to ban abortion nationwide and championing the global gag rule. Rep. Johnson also led efforts to attack gender-affirming care and LGBTQ+ communities. The January 6th sympathizer denied the 2020 election results and led the amicus brief in support of a Texas lawsuit seeking to overturn the results. He also wants to restrict access to reproductive health care to service members and their families and has co-sponsored legislation to block patients from care at Planned Parenthood health centers.

Statement from Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO, Planned Parenthood Action Fund:

“Mike Johnson has a long and disastrous record of attacking abortion rights and the full suite of sexual and reproductive health care services. House Republicans, including those claiming to be moderates, know exactly what they are doing by electing him as speaker: they are fully embracing extremism and a plan to ban abortion nationwide. We need them to do the job they were sent to Congress to do: govern and fund the government, including sexual and reproductive health care programs. Instead, they’ve chosen another out-of-touch and dangerous politician to lead their chaotic and dysfunctional crusade to take away our rights. Our communities deserve better.”
