In today’s Quickie: Indiana teens push for comprehensive sex education and France moves to enshrine abortion rights in its Constitution.

INDIANA TEENS SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS: Earlier this week, a group of young people from Indianapolis met with their state legislators to push for comprehensive sex education. They also reminded lawmakers that an IUD and an abortion are two different things, given that an Indiana state legislator conflated the two last week. Indiana is one of 21 states without a mandate for sex ed, and schools that do include it in their curriculum are required to emphasize abstinence.

“We know sex education is essential to young people’s health, and that they deserve to have information, resources, and skills to protect their health and build their futures — without shame or judgment. Yet many young people still do not have access to sex education,” said Leslie Montgomery, Education Manager for Planned Parenthood Great Northwest, Hawaiʻi, Alaska, Indiana, Kentucky (PPGNHAIK). A report from Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS) suggests that Indiana’s sex ed curriculum and its lack of standardization and inclusivity “stigmatize marginalized youth, such as students of color and LGBTQAI+ youth, and presents further challenges in ensuring that low-income districts have access to the resources needed to implement sex education”.

FRANCE MOVES TO PROTECT THE RIGHT TO ABORTION: Today, France’s Senate will vote on a constitutional amendment to protect the right to abortion,  specifying that “the law determines the conditions by which is exercised the freedom of women to have recourse to an abortion, which is guaranteed”. The bill was overwhelmingly approved by the National Assembly in January and will pass to parliament for approval should the Senate accept the same version today. The government cited the overturning of Roe and the continued attacks on abortion care in the United States in the introduction of the bill. France is making strides to safeguard the freedom of their citizens’ to have control over their own bodies.
