In today’s Quickie: Michigan advocates hold roundtable calling for Reproductive Health Act passage, hospitals unable to provide lifesaving abortions under Indiana’s limited exceptions, and Leslie Jones shares her abortion story in newly released memoir.

MICHIGAN LEADERS TO HOLD ROUNDTABLE AT 1:30 PM TODAY ABOUT THE VITAL NEED TO PASS THE REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH ACT:  This afternoon, leaders of Michigan abortion rights advocacy organizations are holding a roundtable conversation calling for lawmakers to pass the Reproductive Health Act to help ensure to abortion access across the state. The conversation is expected to center around the potential consequences Michiganders might face if lawmakers do not vote to pass the bill, particularly following the overwhelming passage of Proposal 3 in 2022.

REMINDER FROM INDIANA — ABORTION BAN “EXCEPTIONS” DON’T WORK: Last week, reporting from the Indiana Capitol Chronicle confirmed what we’ve known all along: so-called exceptions under abortion bans don’t work. In their survey of the eight largest Indiana hospital systems, Capitol Chronicle reporters found only one system — Indiana University Health — that would provide abortion to people under the rape and incest exception. Three hospital systems, all religiously-affiliated, outright said that they don’t provide abortions even under the law’s exception. Other hospital systems refused to answer about their policies.

“It is unconscionable that Indiana’s hospitals would refuse to provide critical care to our most vulnerable neighbors. Instead of being given their full range of care options, victims of rape and incest in Indiana are likely to unknowingly end up at a hospital that will put ideology over medicine” Rebecca Gibron, CEO for Planned Parenthood Great Northwest, Hawaii, Alaska, Indiana, Kentucky, said of the report. “This lack of transparency underscores the continued importance of Planned Parenthood health centers in Indiana. Hoosiers across the state know that they can always turn to Planned Parenthood for accurate information – unbiased by ideology or fear of political consequences.”

PLANNED PARENTHOOD SAVES LIVES: In a newly released memoir, ‘Leslie F*cking Jones,’ former ‘SNL‘ star Leslie Jones details how Planned Parenthood saved her life. Leslie shares that she has had three abortions but it was the education and compassion she received at Planned Parenthood that taught her how to correctly use prevention methods to avoid getting pregnant.

On Saturday, September 23, 2023, Planned Parenthood and the Human Rights Campaign Foundation applauded Leslie for her longtime and passionate advocacy for sexual and reproductive and LGBTQ+ rights and your commitment to fighting racial injustice as she received their joint “Entertainer of the Year” award during the CBCF Annual Legislative Conference.

Earlier this year, while guest hosting ‘The Daily Show’, Jones spoke about her personal relationship with Planned Parenthood.
