In today’s Quickie: Montanans Securing Reproductive Rights files an emergency petition over biased language and Alabama Democrat flips House seat.

MONTANANS SECURING REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS SUES OVER BIASED BALLOT LANGUAGE: Earlier this week, Montanans Securing Reproductive Rights (MSRR) filed an emergency petition asking the Montana Supreme Court to send the ballot statement drafted by MSRR directly to the Montana Secretary of State, overruling the ballot statement submitted by Attorney General Austen Knudsen on Monday. As reported by the Daily Montanan, the attorney general’s statement is a complete rewrite of the original submission, containing language that MSRR called “confusing and prejudicial.” This latest development comes after weeks of delays created by the attorney general to keep the initiative, which would enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution, off Montana’s November 2024 ballot. The attorney general has until Friday to respond to the petition, and a ruling is expected soon after.

In a statement, MSRR leaders Akilah Deernose, Executive Director, ACLU of Montana; Kiersten Iwai, Executive Director, Forward Montana; and Martha Fuller, CEO & President, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Montana said, “The Attorney General’s strategy here is obvious and desperate: to force MSRR to go to Court again, causing more delay in hopes of denying Montanans the opportunity to secure their right to abortion. Montanans deserve better and MSRR is determined to give voters a shot at a fair, sensible abortion rights initiative. No politicians can make these personal decisions for Montanans — the ability to control their own bodies, plan their futures, and make private medical decisions is on the line.”

ALABAMA DEMOCRAT FLIPS SEAT BLUE RUNNING ON REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS: On Tuesday night, Marilyn Lands won Alabama House District Seat 10, defeating her Republican opponent. Lands ran on a platform focused on repealing Alabama’s no-exceptions abortion ban, fully restoring access to IVF, and safeguarding the right to contraceptives. This triumph not only underscores the strength of these issues in the Southeast but also marks a significant momentum shift heading into November. Planned Parenthood Southeast Advocates had previously endorsed Lands in the special election.
